Chapter 3
by Su Do Nim
Where is She?
[Spoiler warning for The Mandalorian and The Clone Wars]
Water dripped from Koska's features before she pressed the towel to it. It was far more coarse and rigid than she would have expected to find in an officer's quarters.
Imperial quality really does begin and end with weaponry, she remarked silently.
She did not even bother to hang it to dry, instead leaving it crumpled on the rim of the washroom sink. Gideon's light cruiser and everything onboard were destined for repurposing into assets for the Mandalorian efforts to retake their homeworld. Hopefully this little towel could find salvation in a long bath in fabric softener along with every other textile on this antiquated ship.
Personally, Koska would have preferred to watch it all burn. Every towel, every uniform, every blasted insignia was a fresh reminder of what had been taken from them. To keep them around felt like subjecting oneself to the clamorous taunts of deeply despised enemies. It was not enough that they had ruled their planet illegitimately and unjustly for over two decades. No, they had to destroy it too. For as it so often seemed was one of the tenets of the Galactic Empire, if they could not have it, no one else could.
But despite the great contempt Koska felt for this ship and everything it represented, slagging it did nothing for them, whereas taking it as their own would be a not-so-small boon to the Mandalorian survivors. What was more, she supposed that there was an element of gratification to be had in simply taking it. Yes, wielding this tool against the same cruel Empire that had gone to such petty lengths to guarantee that no other could prosper in its place was something to enjoy indeed.
And so it was with a marginally improved disposition that the warrior left the officer's quarters. She was on her way to the cruiser's bridge, where she expected to find Lady Kryze. The Rebel dropper - Cara - would likely be there as well. Following the visit from the Jedi, the boarding party had dispersed. After that tearful parting, the Jedi had left with the child, Boba had returned and landed in the cruiser's bay, and those still aboard were soaring their way through hyperspace.
Fennec and Cara had dragged Gideon's limp body to the brig where he would wait until Lady Kryze had him taken into custody. From there, Fennec had relocated to the bay to receive Fett and had been down there with him since. Presumably, she was filling him in on all that had occurred in his absence. Cara had returned to the bridge to monitor the journey.
Lady Kryze had not left the bridge since things had settled. She had claimed that she too wished to oversee the trip, but Koska knew her better than that. Bo-Katan wanted time to plan her next step. Getting to Gideon was supposed to have been the hard part, but now the involvement of Din had complicated things. He had been plenty willing to simply turn over the Darksabre to her - a kind gesture, but a hollow one. Gideon had been correct about what mattered. It was not the object, it was the story.
They could alter the narrative such that Lady Kryze was the one that defeated the Moff in single combat, but that would rob Din of that honour, not that he would much care, Koska imagined. However, even brushing pride aside, other consequences could ensue. Should it ever be discovered that Kryze's claim to the sabre was built atop a lie, her claim to all of Mandalore would come apart at the seams. Mandalorians were a proud bunch, and an aggressively traditional one too. As time went on, Koska found this more and more to be as much of a hinderance as it was anything else. Even so, Lady Kryze needed to be a unifying figure if she had any hopes of taking Mandalore and keeping it, and deceiving her way to power would be nothing if not divisive.
As for Din himself, the bounty hunter had retreated to the quarters for some time to himself. Koska had glimpsed him sitting hunched on a bunk with his back to the door as she made her way down there to wash up. She had elected to leave him alone. He had not redonned his helmet since parting with the child, and Koska took this to mean that he had a lot on his mind.
She was not yet sure she understood him. When they had first met on the fishing boat, learning of his allegiance to the Children of the Watch had not made for a good first impression. Lady Kryze's checkered past was already enough of a vestige of **** Watch for Koska. However, she suspected that she may have been mistaken in her early assessment of Din. In her admittedly meager time in his company, she had come to understand his truest loyalties stood not with the Children of the Watch, but rather with the child. It was plain to see that he cared for the little one. Stars, he had literally taken a blaster bolt for him. But perhaps more telling than even that, was how he had chosen to remove his helmet in his final moments with the child. He had chosen kin over creed.
Perhaps there was still hope for him.
Koska made a detour to pass by the brig on her way to the bridge. She tapped the panel beside the door and a hologram of Gideon sprung to life. He had awoken from the nap Cara had imposed on him. The look on the Moff's face was not one of someone well-rested nor even of someone still recovering from kissing a blaster stock. Rather, it was the look of someone giving very serious consideration to the idea of taking his own life. The look of someone who knew he had a lot to answer for.
"Reap what you sow, sleemo," Koska muttered, powering off the display.
